The guest speaker at the Ladies Fellowship was Andy Bigginton, the Watch Manager, Community Safety, Kent Fire & Rescue Service.
Andy gave a helpful presentation about how to keep safe in the home and what steps to take to prevent fires occurring. He said that the Service was happy to visit and inspect people s homes for fire safety and where necessary would provide and fit smoke alarms free of charge. The video presentation of how quickly a fire develops in a living room was very effective in making us aware of the need to know what to do if there is a fire and what plans to make for an escape route. It also showed the power of heat and fire. The Watch Manager, Andy, said that the fire service attends all fire calls and would be there in ten minutes. It is important to call them and not fight fires yourself.
Irene Maycock gave the epilogue and after reading some humorous sayings by children she said: Fireman have to be fit and strong and brave and prepared to strike into action for many dangerous missions. We here are physically not strong enough to be fire persons but we can endeavour to be strong as Christians. Romans 15 says: Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?”
That’s exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy for himself by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped out. “I took on the troubles of the troubled,” is the way Scripture puts it. Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next. May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all.
Members of the Ladies Fellowship are looking forward to a strawberry tea in July.
